Recent research shows that a vegan diet if planned correctly has many health benefits. Elimination of meat and other animal based products can help reduce excessive consumption of fats, proteins and sugars. These changes to the diet can help lower cholesterol, reduce risk for cardiovascular disease, obesity, etc. Well planned vegan diet is low in calories, yet very nutrient dense. For years the question was if vegan diet is appropriate for children, adolescents, and pregnant women or elderly. The concern was that certain lifecycles require more nutrients, protein, etc. The argument was that vegan diet is low in protein and fats, hence unhealthy for children, adolescents, etc. Recent research has proven this assumption incorrect. It is important to note that there are different types of vegan diets out there and older research studies did not take that into account. Current studies have proven that carefully designed vegan diet can be very beneficial to people of all ages in all different lifecycles.
Why is vegan diet healthier for you? Scientists have been able to demonstrate that animal based products cause inflammatory responses in our body and inflammation has been directly connected to cause diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, cancer, GI problems, etc. It also has been determined that animal based products are very acidic which causes leaching of calcium out of your bones. Therefore widely believed theory of drinking more milk or consuming other dairy products will help keep your bones healthy and help prevent osteoporosis, is false and can actually cause leeching of calcium out of your bones which in turn results in osteopenia or osteoporosis. Another advantage is reduction in calories in vegan diet which can result in weight loss, hence helping reduce obesity rates in the country and reducing rates of all the lifestyle diseases created by poor diet and excessive weight.
One of the other concerns that most people have about vegan diet is that it is boring and meals are very bland. Although it can be true, it doesn’t have to be. There are ways of making your vegan meals just as delicious as your regular meat and dairy rich meals. There are so many natural vegan substitutes to dairy products that are plant based, that you can create fantastic and delicious vegan meals in the same amount of time as your regular meal. It does take a little creativity and research to find great recipes. Most meals can be modified to be vegan. Use of proper spices and cooking methods is very helpful in creating meals that the entire family will like. With the popularity of vegan lifestyle on the rise, there are more restaurants that cater to the lifestyle. So on the days that you don’t want to or can’t cook, enjoy a meal from one of those restaurants.
Vegan is the new healthy way of living.
