Our bodies have been perfectly designed to naturally detoxify and eliminate toxic chemicals. However, every perfectly designed “machine” has a breaking point, especially if it is overworked and is not well-maintained.
It is my mission and passion to spread the truth about our toxic exposures. We are constantly exposed to potentially toxic chemicals and we simply cannot escape them. Further, chemicals are not the enemy… until they get to a level that can cause toxic health effects. Many chemicals are natural and it is when they are repurposed or misused that there is the potential for unintended toxicity to manifest.
The reason that I wrote “Talking Toxicology” is because I want everyone to have access to the TRUTH about toxicity, as well as learn how to reduce their overall toxic burden. A guide that is easily understandable and useful to the average person!
There are so many people and young children being diagnosed with completely preventable chronic diseases. When your body is out of balance, it simply loses its ability to efficiently detoxify.
DETOX, TOXICITY & TOXIN are some of the most misused terms!!
So many people that I meet think that they know what detoxification is — but they have NO idea what they are talking about. Often times thanks to inaccurate portrayals by junk products. This is beyond frustrating to any Toxicologist. Detoxification is not simply a bowel movement. But marketing of many dangerous products claiming detoxification are nothing more than laxatives, which provide NO nutritional support of the detoxification system. So I caution anyone to stay away from long-term use of products with stimulants and laxative ingredients claiming to detox… this is NOT detoxification… it is a stimulant assisted bowel movement.
What is detoxification? Simply stated it is the biochemical conversion of chemicals into something less toxic (less harmful), so that it will not cause a toxic effect in the body while simultaneously preparing it for elimination from the body. The liver is the main detoxifying organ and as it works to make absorbed chemicals less toxic, glutathione (liver antioxidant) levels will decrease, if these levels are not allowed to be replenished, you can go into a state of saturation toxicokinetics… meaning that your liver is no longer able to keep up with the amount of chemicals it needs to detoxify. The kidneys are the next most important detoxifying organs, as they work to aid in elimination of toxic chemicals. Think about this: when the liver starts to fail, all other organs shut down and death very quickly follows. The kidneys are highly efficient, but when they lose their ability to efficiently eliminate “toxics”, you will no longer be able to eliminate chemicals at a rate which allows your body to function in a healthy state. Ever wonder why there are so many dialysis places of business around you? Losing the ability to naturally detoxify completely impacts the quality of life and overall longevity. But knowing what detoxification is, is not enough…
I am so honored and grateful when I meet people who have made changes to reduce their toxic exposures and who have used nutrition and supplementation to improve their overall health. Many of my physician friends and colleagues want their patients to make these types of changes, but have become frustrated with so many patients that want a quick fix in a prescription and refuse to take any preventative measures. It is not normal to have to take a pill every day just to maintain a semblance of a quality life. Do you know anyone that refuses to make positive changes and throws out the lazy response, “You are going to die of something anyway?” You probably cannot help these people, but I often see some of those same nay-sayers desperate for help and willing to do anything when it is far too late.
Why? Because maintenance is work. Anything worth maintaining is work. Your home, car, clothing, electronics… whatever you choose, needs to be maintained. But far too many treat our bodies like trash cans because we do not feel an immediate toxic effect. There are enough examples around us (often times in our own families) of poor health and suffering caused by years of abuse, but instead of taking responsibility, we make up an excuse to continue to treat our bodies inappropriately.
When I appear in front of a live audience or on television or radio, I do not inform you about potentially toxic exposures to scare you. But I spread the truth about the sheer number of chemicals that we introduce into our own bodies so that you can be aware of this fact and learn to recognize (and hopefully reduce) toxicity. Our bodies gives us signs indicating toxicity that we often ignore. Why is that? I tell you about chemicals because there is NO research that gives us an accurate picture of the consequences of being exposed to consistent and ever-changing chemical mixtures in our air (indoor & outdoor), water and foods — and household products. But there are patterns of toxicity that are emerging in epidemiological studies. Data which are strong enough to contribute to the weight of acceptable scientific evidence.
What can you do? Educate yourself. Be open-minded and do not ignore the truth from experts and from your own body. Eliminate or reduce the exposures that you can control. Use protective equipment when cleaning and maintaining your home and vehicles. Do not overburden your bodies and use nutrition and natural supplementation to help nourish your bodies so that it can effectively detoxify.
